Yes. We are on page one of Google for the terms that our clients actually search. To be fair, we didn’t do it ourselves. We had a guerrilla marketing firm do it for us. But this is how they did it.
If you want a reference to a good surgeon, would you ask a farmer or another doctor?
Google takes links the same way. If you have a website about cars, paying some SEO team in the Eastern Block to build spammy links is just as effective as getting a bunch of Hari Krishnas to recommend a proctologist. Unrelated links are worthless.
So instead, if you’re a design firm, get other design firms to link to you. Get ad agencies, photographers, illustrators, offset printers, etc… to link to you.
The most relevant companies are the companies that do exactly what you do. If you can get them to link to you, you’re on page one in a few weeks. It doesn’t take a lot of links. It just takes more of the RIGHT links than the #2 guy in Google’s page one.
They say that if you and your buddy are being chased by a bear in the forest, you don’t have to run faster than the bear!
How to do this, namely, how to get your competitors to link to you is another story all together. If you were born with the ability to wrap people around your little finger, it shouldn’t be hard. If not, the solution to that enigma requires social hacking.
