What do you do?
I am an artist. I paint, draw, and create. I make art centred around the theme of birth and motherhood. I also make art about femininity, goddess art, and art about nature and animals. I love all of these things.
What are the biggest changes you see happening in your industry?
The biggest changes are happening via social media and internet based venues. Some places (like Facebook) are trying to constantly squeeze money out of people (artists especially, it seems) while others (like Etsy) seem to be constantly amping up the ways in which they support their sellers and buyers without raising costs. There are also other opportunities that have come to me via the internet where I have had the opportunity to show my work digitally (projected images) in places like New York City, which would have been unheard of even a few years ago. I know nothing compares to seeing real art in person, but a digital exhibit is the next best thing. I like that kind of innovation. It’s modern and fun.
What opportunities and challenges will these changes bring about?
I can’t afford to advertise on Facebook just to increase my “likes” and I can’t constantly drone on and on about all the changes that Facebook goes through. It is my least favourite social media outlet. Etsy, on the other hand, has remained so constant that I feel perfectly free to give myself the time and space I need to grow as an artist and a seller because I know it will be there to support me as I learn and grow. I find that very comforting. I hope more opportunities come my way as I move forward with my art business.
What are your biggest goals?
My biggest goal is to support myself as an artist and hopefully do well enough at my small business that my husband can work with me at least part-time.
Who and what would you need to reach your goals fast?
I need financial support. I need promotional support. I need to believe in myself above all and I need to keep making good art.
Finally, who should contact you and why?
Anybody looking to help support me as an artist should contact me because my work and I are well worth the time and investment. Well? It’s true!
